State Data at Work - Five Year Citation Count for Quality Measure 1

Quality Measure 1 - Activities & Socialization - captures Choose Well member compliance with state regulations governing planned activities for residents.  The Choose Well Team compared Choose Well member compliance with the rest of San Diego's assisted living facilities.  Here are the results:

Only one citation for planned activities has been issued to one Choose Well member back in 2015 (Table 1).

Of the 4,493 total citations issued to all San Diego facilities by the California's Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division (DSS/CCLD) between 2013 and 2018, a total of 12 citations were issued related to planned activities (Table 1).

Of the 12 citations that were issued to all San Diego facilities for planned activities, 11 were issued to facilities licensed for 1-6 beds and 1 to a facility licensed for 16-49 (Table 2

Table 2 - San Diego Citations for Planned Activities by Bed Size

Citations were typically issued in response to residents remaining in their rooms, falling asleep in front of televisions or televisions being used as a form of activity.  Excerpts from the public records suggest DSS/CCLD are inspecting facilities for activities "encouraging residents to maintain and develop their fullest potential for independent living" and activities achieving "brain stimulation and social interaction".

Each month the Choose Well Team will be looking at the compliance of Choose Well members as compared to the general population of San Diego's assisted living facilities.  Check back next month for results on Quality Measure 2 - Emergency Disaster Planning.
